Hot Gas Companies For 2014

Countless numbers of consumers re-evaluated their spending patterns after the recent economic downturn. One way people have decided to trim the fat in their budgets is by ditching their once-beloved, big-branded foods and beverages. Where does this leave name-brand manufacturers?

Commoditizing categories
Deloitte's annual American Pantry Study shows brand loyalty has dropped for yet another year, indicating a shrinking number of consumers who are remaining faithful to their favorite big-branded goods. In fact, 90% of consumers are reaching for private labels instead of big brands.

The study identified four distinct brand loyalty archetypes, the most concerning being "category brands with declining loyalty." The categories that ranked the worst off in this archetype were salad dressings and cookies. Does this mean big-branded dressing and cookie manufacturers are approaching their own expiration dates?

That's a huge issue for Kraft Foods Group (NASDAQ: KRFT  ) and Mondelez International (NASDAQ: MDLZ  ) . After its October 2012 split from Mondelez, Kraft retained the vast smorgasbord of salad dressing brands. But even aside from dressings, many categories in which Kraft competes already face commoditization and serious private-label threats. Another drawback for Kraft is that it's confined to mature North American markets, a factor limiting its long-term growth potential.

    May
We had two MLP IPOs in May. First up was Emerge Energy Services (NYSE: EMES  ) , which hit the books on May 9, and is up 16% already. The partnership has a sand segment and a fuel processing and distribution segment, which engages primarily in the separation of transmix.

As we reach the end of the first quarter, Tesla Motors (TSLA) is leading the pack with a massive 48% gain, followed by Emerge Energy Services LP (EMES) at 27%. Not too shabby given that the S&P 500 is barely positive on the year.

My pick for 2014 — South African mobile phone giant MTN Group (MTNOY) is off to a slower start, down about 2%. But with nine months left in 2014, I expect MTNOY stock to make a serious run for the top spot. And in fact, in the month of March, it has been the second-best-performing stock in the contest after EMES.

  • [By Robert Rapier] There were a half a dozen initial public offerings (IPOs) by master limited partnerships in the first half of the year, and all but one are now in the green while one has nearly doubled in value.

The first MLP IPO of 2013 debuted on Jan. 15. USA Compression Partners (NYSE: USAC), which I mentioned in last week’s issue, provides compression services for the oil and gas industry. Units have advanced 36 percent since the IPO, and at the current price yield 7.3 percent.

The day after the USA Compression Partners IPO, CVR Refining (NYSE: CVRR) made its debut.  CVRR was spun off from CVR Energy (NYSE: CVI), and both companies remain majority-owned by Carl Icahn. CVR Refining’s primary assets are two refineries located in Kansas and Oklahoma with a combined processing capacity of approximately 185,000 barrels per day (bpd). These refineries are strategically located near the major Cushing, Oklahoma shipment and storage hub, with easy access to discounted feedstock from the nearby Permian basin, as well as the Bakken shale and Canadian oil sands.

But refiners have struggled with diminished margins in 2013 because of a much lower Brent-WTI differential. After the recently concluded second quarter, CVRR declared a distribution of $1.35 per unit, bringing its per-unit distributions for the first half of the year to $2.93. At the same time, CVR Refining lowered its annual distribution target to a range of $4.10 to $4.80 per unit. This was lower than the outlook issued in March, when it foresaw annual distributions of $5.50 to $6.50. CVRR units slid on the news, and are presently trading slightly below the $25 IPO price. The lower end of the revised forecast implies distributions of $1.17 per unit in the second half of the year, for a forward annualized yield of 10 percent based on the recent $23.50 unit price.

SunCoke Energy Partners (NYSE: SXCP) was the third IPO to debut during a very busy third week of January. SXCP is the first M

Small cap stocks MineralRite Corp (OTCMKTS: RITE), New China Global Inc (OTCMKTS: NCGI) and Metrospaces Inc (OTCMKTS: MSPC) have all been getting some extra attention lately in various investment newsletters thanks to a few paid promotions. Of course, there is nothing wrong with properly disclosed promotions or investor relations type of activities, but they can and often do backfire on unwary investors and traders alike. So how hot are these three small caps for investors? Here is a quick reality check:

Hot Gas Companies For 2014: Western Gas Equity Partners LP (WGP)

Western Gas Equity Partners, LP, incorporated on September 11, 2007, was formed to own three types of partnership interests in Western Gas Partners, LP (WES). WES is a limited partnership formed by Anadarko Petroleum Corporation to own, operate, acquire and develop midstream energy assets. As of December 31, 2011, the Company had no independent operations. On January 13, 2012, WES acquired 100% interest of Mountain Gas Resources LLC (MGR). On August 1, 2012, WES acquired 24% interest of Chipeta Processing LLC (Chipeta).

WES is engaged in the business of gathering, processing, compressing, treating and transporting natural gas, condensate, natural gas liquids (NGLs) and crude oil for Anadarko, as well as third-party producers and customers. The assets of WGP, through its partnership interests in WES, include thirteen gathering systems, seven natural gas treating facilities, ten natural gas processing facilities, two NGL pipelines, one interstate gas pipeline, one intrastate gas pipeline, and three separate interests in Fort Union, White Cliffs Pipeline, LLC (White Cliffs) and Rendezvous Gas Services, LLC (Rendezvous). These assets are located in East and West Texas, the Rocky Mountains (Colorado, Utah and Wyoming), and the Mid-Continent (Kansas and Oklahoma). WES also has facilities under construction in South Texas and northeast Colorado. During the year ended December 31, 2011, WES completed the construction of a cryogenic processing train at its Chipeta facility , which had a designed capacity of approximately 300 million cubic feet of natural gas per day and was placed into service in October 2012.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

The exact same setup is potentially giving traders a reason to jump into shares of $8.5 billion midstream gas company Western Gas Equity Partners (WGP). Just like Flotek, WGP is forming a textbook channel up. And this week, Western Gas is testing trendline support.

It's a little too early to call WGP's trendline buyable here. At some point, all trends eventually fail -- and when this one does, you don't want to be left holding the bag. A bounce this week will be a good indication that WGP can still catch a bid at this price level. When and if that happens, I'd recommend keeping a tight protective stop in place just below WGP's most recent swing low at $38.

While the 50-day moving average has been crossing paths with WGP quite a bit in the last month, I'd recommend ignoring it. The average hasn't acted as a meaningful support or resistance level to date. In the case of this particular name, it's just not technically relevant.

Advisors' Opinion:

This isn't some growing new industry set to take the world further into the 21st century. It's an old concept that hasn't innovated, won't innovate, and will slowly but surely die out over this century. When I walk into a Walgreens, I see a miniature Target (TGT), a more expensive Dollar Tree (DLTR), and a provider of prescriptions in a world where everything is becoming mail order.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

The other stock the firm likes is Dollar Tree Inc. (NASDAQ: DLTR). The company's shares have lost about 4.6% since reporting an earnings per share (EPS) miss for the third quarter and the Sterne Agee analysts see the lower price as a "great entry point" for buying the stock. Dollar Tree raised fiscal year 2013 EPS guidance from a range of $2.66 to $2.77 to a new range of $2.72 to $2.78, effectively raising the mid-point by $0.04. Sterne Agee reiterated! its Buy rating on the stock with a price target of $63. Dollar Tree's shares are trading down nearly 0.4% at $55.99 in a 52-week range of $37.47 to $60.19.

Perpetually struggling department store J.C. Penney Co. (JCP)  said it expects a sales boost this holiday season as it returns to a promotional strategy. But for the most part, retailers including Dollar Tree Inc. (DLTR)  , GameStop Corp. (GME)   and Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (ANF)   gave dour outlooks in their earnings reports.

ETF Outlook for Friday, March 28, 2014

iShares MSCI Brazil Index ETF (NYSE: EWZ)

The breakout last week has continued for the Latin American ETF, with EWZ up 4.6 percent Thursday as it hit a new 2014 high. The ETF was led by a 7.7 percent gain in Petrobras, a major oil and gas company in the country. The ETF has now moved into an extreme overbought level with the RSI reading at 97. This suggests the ETF could be due for a short-term pullback, however when momentum is high an ETF can continue to rally with an overbought RSI for days if not weeks.

United States Natural Gas ETF (NYSE: UNG)

The cold weather continues to grip the Northeast and natural gas prices remain high. UNG pulled back to support at the $23.50 area this week before beginning to attract buyers again. The ETF was up 2.7 percent Thursday and closed at a new one-week high as volume picked up. Technically the chart is suggesting the ETF could continue its run to the $26 area based on the recent action.

The one concern that investors have is that once the winter is over will it lead to a major decline in natural gas prices? On the flip side, as more LNG leaves the country it will push up prices here at home. The key will be to watch the $23.50 support area for answers.

Top 10 US Companies To Own For 2014

iShares MSCI Spain Index ETF (NYSE: EWP)

Overnight, a surprise fall in the inflation number out of Spain had a ripple affect across the region. The 0.2 percent annual rate decline in consumer prices was the weakest number since October 2009 and well below expectations. Borrowing costs for Spain and Italy fell to their lowest levels in three years and stocks were trading higher.

The mindset is that the inflation number will lead to more action from the European Central Bank that could lead to a weaker Euro and stronger stocks. The Euro traded down to the lowest level in three weeks after the number was announced. EWP will be a good gauge as to how stocks will react to deflation concerns in the region.

4 Stocks Triggering Breakouts on Big Volume

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- Professional traders running mutual funds and hedge funds don't just look at a stock's price moves; they also track big changes in volume activity. Often when above-average volume moves into an equity, it precedes a large spike in volatility.

>>5 Stocks With Big Insider Buying

Major moves in volume can signal unusual activity, such as insider buying or selling -- or buying or selling by "superinvestors."

Unusual volume can also be a major signal that hedge funds and momentum traders are piling into a stock ahead of a catalyst. These types of traders like to get in well before a large spike, so it's always a smart move to monitor unusual volume. That said, remember to combine trend and price action with unusual volume. Put them all together to help you decipher the next big trend for any stock.

>>5 Hated Earnings Stocks You Should Love

With that in mind, let's take a look at several stocks rising on unusual volume recently.

Clovis Oncology

Clovis Oncology (CLVS), a biopharmaceutical company, focuses on acquiring, developing and commercializing anti-cancer agents in the U.S., Europe and internationally. This stock closed up 4.9% at $77.50 in Wednesday's trading session.

Wednesday's Volume: 888,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 575,130

Volume % Change: 75%

From a technical perspective, CLVS bounced sharply higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $74.66 with above-average volume. This bounce is coming after CLVS briefly traded under its 50-day moving average and hit a recent low of $71.19. Shares of CLVS are now quickly moving within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if CLVS manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance at Wednesday's high of $80.74 to right around $82.50 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CLVS as long as it's trending above Wednesday's low of $74.06 or above more near-term support at $71.19 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that this near or above 575,130 shares. If that breakout materializes soon, then CLVS will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $87.23 to its 52-week high at $93.33.

Gildan Activewear

Gildan Activewear (GIL) manufactures and sells apparel products in the U.S., Canada, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. It operates in two segments, Printwear and Branded Apparel. This stock closed up 1.6% at $49.71 in Wednesday's trading session.

Wednesday's Volume: 865,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 259,795

Volume % Change: 283%

From a technical perspective, GIL trended modestly higher here right above some near-term support at $48.17 with above-average volume. This stock has been downtrending badly for the last three months, with shares falling from its high of $54.89 to its recent low of $48.17. During that downtrend, shares of GIL have been consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of GIL are starting to get strong upside volume flows and the stock is moving within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if GIL manages to take out Wednesday's high of $49.94 to some more near-term overhead resistance at $50.34 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in GIL as long as it's trending above its recent low of $48.17 or above its 200-day at $47.57 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 259,795 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then GIL will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at its 50-day moving average of $51.31 to $52.50, or even $54.

Noodles & Company

Noodles & Company (NDLS) develops and operates fast casual restaurants in the U.S. This stock closed up 4.2% at $41.35 in Wednesday's trading session.

Wednesday's Volume: 643,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 391,416

Volume % Change: 85%

From a technical perspective, NDLS ripped higher here and broke out above some near-term overhead resistance at $40.49 with above-average volume. This spike on Wednesday is quickly pushing shares of NDLS within range of triggering an even bigger breakout trade. That trade will hit if NDLS manages to take out Wednesday's high of $41.54 to some key past overhead resistance at $43.95 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in NDLS as long as it's trending above Wednesday's low of $39.47 or above $38 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 391,416 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then NDLS will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap-down-day zone from last November that started just above $48.

Lazard

Lazard (LAZ), together with its subsidiaries, operates as a financial advisory and asset management firm. This stock closed up 1.3% at $46.74 in Wednesday's trading session.

Wednesday's Volume: 980,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 721,287

Volume % Change: 50%

From a technical perspective, LAZ spiked modestly higher here right above its 50-day moving average of $44.83 with above-average volume. This spike on Wednesday is starting to push shares of LAZ within range of triggering a big breakout trade. That trade will hit if LAZ manages to take out Wednesday's high of $47.68 to its 52-week high of $48.70 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in LAZ as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $44.83 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 721,287 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then LAZ will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $50 to $55.

Best Stock of 2014 Update: EMES Continues to Shine

Last December I brought to your attention Emerge Energy Services LP (EMES) as my Best Stock of 2014. EMES is an independent oil and gas services company I love with a very unique business model. Since that time, shares of the upstart EMES have continued to shine, up 27% year-to-date.

BestStocks2014size185 Best Stock of 2014 Update: EMES Continues to ShineEmerge Energy Services made its public debut in May 2013 as a diversified energy MLP operating in two very distinct segments of the industry: Sand Production (SP) and Fuel Processing and Distribution (FP&D).

The firm announced its 2013 earnings results a few weeks ago, completing its first full year as a public company, and giving investors, if you can believe it, even more optimism for the future. Both of EMES’ two operating divisions have exhibited spectacular growth this past year, and despite double digit (even triple digit growth the SP segment), neither can fully keep up with customer demand.

EMES’ sand production unit, which produces specialized silica sand used in the hydraulic fracturing process, has more than doubled its customer base while growing revenues 152% during the year. It’s already the leading manufacturer of Northern White silica sand, yet to keep up with demand, the firm is already in the process of securing permits for two new facilities.

Meanwhile, the fuel processing and distribution segment continues to grow at an exceptional rate as well, with three new transload sites and nearly 3,000 additional rail cars on order for delivery over the next 12 months.

EMES’ first full public year was a phenomenal one, with total revenues up 40% from a year ago, while net income climbed 105%!

As a result it was able to declare a distribution of $1.00 per unit for the fourth quarter, a 16% jump from the previous quarter, and a 61% increase over the initial guidance from the prospectus.

Emerge Energy Services remains an unconventional way to to take advantage of the growth in the explosive shale formation fracturing process, so don’t miss out.

For those investors who agree with this position that gold bullion should be a part of their portfolio, you may want to look at exchange-traded funds (ETFs) like the iShares Gold Trust (NYSE: IAU). This ETF provides investors with exposure to gold bullion, and it’s a cheaper alternative to the SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) ETF.

  • [By Quoth the Raven]

The other common way to invest is through ETFs such as iShares Gold Trust (IAU), which basically track the price of the commodity by physically purchasing bullion. The ETFs asset price reflect the price as which it trades for. If the underlying asset is silver, the ETF trades proportional to what the silver's worth.

Although the Fed doubled its bond buying last September, the top gold exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, including SPDR Gold Shares (NYSEMKT: GLD  ) , iShares Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: IAU  ) , and ETFS Physical Swiss Gold Shares (NYSEMKT: SGOL  ) , have dropped around 25% each over the last 12 months, which speaks to gold's extreme vulnerability to QE tapering. Even the mere mention of tapering seems to send gold into a tailspin, as seen with SPDR Gold Shares, which has plunged 24% year to date and also suffered massive losses with its physical holdings. Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSEMKT: GDX  ) has suffered a massive drop of 48% so far in 2013, making it one of the worst-performing ETFs this year.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Robert Rapier]

The best looking investment for a longer-term investor has to be the natural gas producers. The fourth LNG export license was recently approved by the Department of Energy, and first mover Cheniere Energy (NYSE: LNG) is expected to begin shipping to customers in Europe and Asia by the fourth quarter of 2015.

  • [By Jim Jubak, Senior Markets Editor, MoneyShow.com]

Yesterday, September 12, shares of Cheniere Energy (LNG) hit a new 52-week high of $33.76. As of the close, they'd dropped back slightly to $33.10. That still puts the stock up 18.5% from its August 30 close.

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

Cheniere Energy (NYSEMKT: LNG  ) : There are some certainties that make Cheniere Energy an attractive company. It has a major leg-up in the U.S. liquefied natural gas export market with the first facility slated to come online in 2015. It also has started up the construction of a second facility in Corpus Christi evident in the recent $9.5 billion deal with construction company Bechtel. This second facility is slated to come online in 2018. Add these things together and you get a company that will have a strong cash-generating machine that will fuel its strong dividend yield once Cheniere Energy Partners (NYSEMKT: CQP  ) starts to generate surplus operational cash.

But now that markets have had time to react, a number of different opinions are surfacing about how important Detroit's bankruptcy is:

Investment manager BlackRock said early this week that its analysts "anticipate the impact of the event will be much smaller than its size might indicate," calling Detroit "an idiosyncratic situation" and saying that therefore its analysts "do not anticipate a widespread systemic effect." UBS noted that "precedents that do exist would appear to favor holders of [general-obligation municipal] bonds backed by an unlimited property tax" in its argument that the bankruptcy shouldn't create big problems, also noting that muni-bond insurance companies cover almost 90% of Detroit's debt. Citigroup notes that "the magnitude of Detroit's economic and financial problems dwarfs those of any other large local government in the U.S. by a wide amount" in arguing that muni-bond yields aren't likely to rise too far. Taking the other side of the argument, muni-bond specialist Nuveen Asset Management believes that "municipal investors should now view all Michigan general-obligation bonds as having no greater standing than any other form of municipal obligations," reversing the general understanding that general-obligation bonds backed by broad powers to tax are inherently more secure than bonds with more limited sources of revenue backing them. Indeed, Michigan-specific muni-bond funds took much more serious hits over the week than the broad muni-bond market, with BlackRock MuniYield Michigan (NYSE: MYM  ) falling almost 5% since last Thursday and Nuveen Michigan Quality Income (NYSE: NUM  ) posting about a 4% loss. Analyst Meredith Whitney went a step further, predicting a wave of municipal bankruptcies resulting from Detroit's action. Yet after having cried wolf in late 2010 and having proven to be wrong in her expected 12-month timeline for massive defaults, Whitney has had her credibility questioned by many ex

Oil Trader Gunvor Claims Business as Usual after U.S. Sanctions

When President Obama announced the second round of sanctions Thursday on 13 Russian individuals, the list included Gennady Timchenko, co-founder of Gunvor, the world's fourth-largest oil trading firm. To say the announcement sent jitters through the commodities trading world is more than a slight understatement.

But Gunvor appears to have dodged a bullet. Shortly after the sanctions were announced, Gunvor's CEO, Torbjorn Tornqvist, said that Timchenko had sold him the Russian's 43% stake in Gunvor for an undisclosed sum. Tornqvist now holds an 87% stake in the trading company.

The Financial Times reported that Tornqvist said the sale "was done on commercial terms and the shares had not been gifted to him." Tornqvist told the newspaper that gifting " would be impossible under Swiss law." Timchenko's stake was likely worth about $1.5 billion based on valuations of rival companies, according to the FT.

Tornqvist's announcement helped steady the oil market when it was announced. But the sale does not mean that everything is the same as it was before the sanctions were announced. Banks and financial institutions are unlikely simply to accept Tornqvist's assurances at face value.

5 Best Mid Cap Stocks To Watch For 2014

Tornqvist told the FT that the company is not a target of the sanctions (true). If the firm is targeted, it will affect the company's investments in the United States and the European Union. Gunvor paid $400 million in 2011 for a stake in the Signal Peak coal mine in eastern Montana.

When the U.S. put Timchenko on its list of sanctioned individuals, the Treasury Department claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin "has investments in Gunvor and may have access to Gunvor funds." Gunvor has categorically denied that Putin is or ever was a stakeholder in the company or that he benefits in any way from its business.

Huge Retailers Offer Black Friday For Spring

It's not really Black Friday, but Black Friday Lite. Some of the country's biggest retailers have chosen this weekend, just a day after the first day of Spring, to promote "Black Friday-like" pricing on a variety of products. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) kicked off its promotion on Friday night and the deals will last through the weekend.

Other stores offering special weekend pricing are home improvement giants The Home Depot Inc. (NYSE: HD) and Lowe's Companies Inc. (NYSE: LOW). In fact, this is virtually the home improvement stores' real Black Friday weekend. Both Home Depot and Lowe's hire thousands of seasonal employees for their Spring selling season, and just as the Thanksgiving-to-Christmas holiday season is a make or break for many retailers, this time of year really is make-or-break time for these two giants.

The home improvement stores appear to have been promoting a Spring Black Friday sales event for several years now. Consumers associate the holiday Black Friday with big discounts, and the Spring version wants to extend that association.

It's not easy, though, because discounts on Spring seasonal merchandise like patio furniture and barbeque grills are not likely to live up to the expectations that consumers have built up about Black Friday pricing. The stores can't offer the new season's patio furniture at a discount of 30% to 50% and have any hope of posting a positive margin and making any profit.

5 Best China Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Walmart, for example, in its press release announcing Spring Black Friday, said it would have more than 60 outdoor items on sale. That's nothing like the number of items that would be on sale in the holiday season. Over-promoting the sale would probably lead to disappointed customers which is why we don't see a strong tie-in with Black Friday.

The stores put out press releases so journalists will pick up the story and spread it around, but the stores' advertising and promotion around the Spring event is definitely muted. They can't afford to have it otherwise.

3 Huge Tech Stocks on Traders' Radars

Top Undervalued Stocks To Buy For 2014

BALTIMORE (Stockpickr) -- Put down the 10-K filings and the stock screeners. It's time to take a break from the traditional methods of generating investment ideas. Instead, let the crowd do it for you.

>>5 Stocks Insiders Love Right Now

From hedge funds to individual investors, scores of market participants are turning to social media to figure out which stocks are worth watching. It's a concept thats known as "crowdsourcing," and it uses the masses to identify emerging trends in the market. Crowdsourcing has long been a popular tool for the advertising industry, but it also makes a lot of sense as an investment tool. After all, the market is completely driven by the supply and demand, so it can be valuable to see what names are trending among the crowd. While some fund managers are already trying to leverage social media resources like Twitter to find algorithmic trading opportunities, for most investors, crowdsourcing works best as a starting point for investors who want a starting point in their analysis. Today, we'll leverage the power of the crowd to take a look at some of the most active stocks on the market today. >>5 Rocket Stocks Worth Buying This Week These "most active" names are the most heavily-traded names on the market -- and often, uber-active names have some sort of a technical or fundamental catalyst driving investors' attention on shares. That's especially true now that earnings season is officially underway. And when there's a big catalyst, there's often a trading opportunity. Without further ado, heres a look at today's stocks. Frontier Communications Nearest Resistance: N/A

Nearest Support: $5

Catalyst: Technical Setup >>5 Stocks Poised for Breakouts Mid-cap communications stock Frontier Communications (FTR) is up 1.3% on high volume this afternoon, following through to new highs after breaking out above $5 resistance on Monday. That price action makes $5 a new support level for shares, and makes more upside the likely trade for shares. Making new highs is significant from an investor psychology standpoint because it means that everyone who has bought shares in the last year is sitting on gains. As a result, the "back to even" mentality is less of a concern than it would be for a name with a higher proportion of shareholders sitting on losses. If you decide to be a buyer here, I'd recommend keeping a stop under the lower support level at $4.90. FTR still pays out a whopping 7.6% dividend yield at current prices.

Oracle

Nearest Resistance: $39.50

Nearest Support: $37.50

Catalyst: Earnings

>>5 Stock Charts Screaming "Buy" in March

Large-cap enterprise software firm Oracle (ORCL) is off 1.2% on high volume this afternoon, following news that the firm missed fourth quarter earnings by 2 cents. Analysts were expecting profits to reach 70 cents per share, but they came in at 68 cents. It's a modest miss, and from a technical standpoint, shares are holding up that it's not a particularly significant one. In short, the uptrend in Oracle remains intact. Shares are re-testing trend line support at $37.50 this afternoon, but that resembles a buying opportunity more than a cause for concern. The fact that buyers are stepping in at support bodes well for ORCL's upside in the next month. First Solar Nearest Resistance: N/A

Nearest Support: $65

Catalyst: Earnings Guidance First Solar (FSLR) is up more than 13% this afternoon, following the firm's release of guidance for 2014 and beyond. The firm expects revenue to fall between $3.7 and $4 billion this year, besting the consensus estimate that falls at the bottom of that range. Most important, it forecasts impressive numbers for 2015 and 2016 that include much higher levels of profitability than the firm sees today. FSLR is testing a key breakout to new highs this afternoon as shares press up through previous resistance at $65. That $65 level has acted like a price ceiling in the past, so the fact that First Solar is catching a bid above it bodes well for buyers. If shares can hold $65 through the close, consider FSLR a buy. To see these stocks in action, check out the at Most-Active Stocks portfolio on Stockpickr.
