Why 2015 Will Be the Year of Solar Energy

Top 10 Blue Chip Companies To Buy Right Now

Men installing solar photovoltaic panels at sunset Lester Lefkowitz Whether you realize it or not, solar energy is becoming a more and more important part of our energy future. In 2013, 29 percent of new electricity-generating capacity in the U.S. was solar energy, and so far in 2014, 36 percent of new capacity is solar. Falling costs and improving technology will drive wider adoption, and 2015 could be a tipping point, bringing the solar industry to new parts of the country. The Year Solar Caught On in the U.S. 2014 has been the start of consumers and utilities alike understanding the positive impact solar can make. GTM Research expects about 6.5 GW of solar energy to be installed in the U.S. in 2014, enough to power nearly 1.1 million homes. But over half of those installations fall in a relatively small area in California and Arizona, so this isn't a nationwide trend -- yet. You can see below that 10 states (not including Hawaii, where solar has long been cost-competitive) are now seeing residential solar systems cost-competitive with the grid, and by 2017 the estimated number jumps to 28 states. In 2015, a growing infrastructure from solar installers will bring solar to new states, expanding the industry's reach. Union of Concerned Scientists Expansion Plans Kicking into High Gear The solar industry knows that more states are seeing competitive prices and is expanding quickly to fill the need, especially in the residential market. SolarCity (SCTY) and Vivint Solar (VSLR) install more than half of the residential solar systems installed in the U.S. today, and they both have big expansion plans in 2015. SolarCity expects to grow from 168,000 customers in September 2014 to over 1 million customers by mid-2018. As the company showed in a recent presentation, its addressable market grows exponentially as it cuts costs. SolarCity's costs today, including sales and general costs, are $2.90 per watt, down 26 percent from just two years ago. If costs continue to fall at anywhere near that rate, the company should be able to keep growing. SolarCity Vivint Solar was founded just three years ago, but it's already grown into the second-largest solar installer in the country, with operations in seven states. Next year, it plans to open another 20 new sales and operations offices, growing beyond a high concentration in Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York. States to watch in the residential solar market next year include Nevada, Texas, and Florida, which have only been small players in residential and commercial solar until now but have high solar insolation and relatively high energy costs. Rooftops Aren't the Only Place Solar Is Popping Up Residential solar is getting most of the attention in the media, but it's actually large utility-scale projects where the biggest impact is coming. These projects account for over half of all solar installed, and states you'd never imagine are starting to see solar growth. Minnesota, Colorado, North Carolina, and Oregon have made solar more cost-effective through policy that gives incentives for utilities to adopt solar and policies that make solar energy cost-effective and easy to connect to the grid. Growth in these states won't likely come on rooftops; it'll be ground-mounted small utility-scale projects that gain adoption, because they're lower-cost than residential solar. And 2015 Is a Tipping Point It's possible that 2015 will be the first year in which over half of new electricity generation capacity in the U.S. will come from solar. It's also likely that the industry will start to solve its intermittency issue, installing energy storage in a growing percentage of homes that decide to go solar. Both would be big milestones for the industry. The potential growth for the solar industry isn't measured in billions of dollars, it's measured in trillions, and in 2015 we'll begin to see the industry's leaders take a larger role in our overall energy future and spread their wings across the country. Like it or not, solar energy is coming to a town near you. More from Travis Hoium

Struggling Office Depot to Shutter 400 U.S. Stores

Hot Low Price Companies To Invest In Right Now

Earns Office Depot Richard Drew/AP BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Office Depot is planning to close at least 400 U.S. stores, as its merger with OfficeMax resulted in an overlap of retail locations that can be consolidated. The combined company's financial results beat Wall Street estimates for the January-March quarter and it raised its full year forecast for operating income Tuesday. Office Depot (ODP) shares jumped 17 percent in morning trading. The office supply retailer had 1,900 stores in the U.S. at the end of the first quarter, so the plans call for closing about 21 percent of them. Office Depot and OfficeMax Inc. completed their $1.2 billion deal last November. Office Depot said it hasn't quantified the number of jobs that will be affected by the store closures but that it will look to place its best talent impacted by the store closings into new roles, wherever possible. Chairman and CEO Roland Smith said in a statement that one of the company's goals this year was to improve how its stores are positioned in North America to meet customer demand better and ensure that it's well positioned in the markets it serves. "The overlapping retail footprint resulting from the merger provides us with a unique opportunity to consolidate and optimize our store portfolio, while maintaining the retail presence necessary to serve our customer," Smith said. Office Depot said Tuesday that it expects to close 150 U.S. stores this year, mostly in the fourth quarter. It closed 14 stores in the first quarter, a company spokeswoman said. All of the store closures are anticipated to occur by the end of 2016. The store closings are expected to result in at least $75 million in annual savings by 2016's end and add to earnings starting next year. Office Depot, which is based in Boca Raton, Florida, said that it's still trying to determine expected working capital savings and costs related to the store closings. The company also reported its first-quarter financial results Tuesday, which include results from OfficeMax. The year-ago results don't include OfficeMax. For the period ended March 29, Office Depot lost $109 million, or 21 cents a share. In the prior-year period it lost $17 million, or 6 cents a share. Removing merger-related expenses and other items, earnings were 7 cents a share. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected earnings of 3 cents a share. Revenue climbed to $4.35 billion from $2.72 billion. Pro forma revenue for the year-ago period was $4.48 billion. Analysts expected revenue of $4.27 billion. The company raised its 2014 outlook for adjusted operating income to be at least $160 million from a prior view of at least $140 million. Shares of Office Depot rose 68 cents, or 16 percent, to $4.85 in late-morning trading.

Top 5 India Stocks To Buy For 2014

Good Morning Traders,

As of this writing 5:05 AM EST, here’s what we see:

US Dollar –Down at 81.200, the Dec US Dollar is down 177 ticks and is trading at 81.120.
Energies – December Oil is down at 94.25.
Financials – The December 30 year bond is down 5 ticks and trading at 131.19.
Indices – The December S&P 500 emini ES contract is unchanged and trading at 1766.00.
Gold – The December gold contract is trading down at 1281.20 and is down 36 ticks from its close.

Initial Conclusion: This is not a correlated market.  The dollar is down- and oil is down- which is not normal but the 30 year bond is trading lower.  The Financials should always correlate with the US dollar such that if the dollar is lower then bonds should follow and vice versa.  The indices are up and the US dollar is trading lower which is correlated.  Gold is trading lower which is not correlated with the US dollar trading down.   I tend to believe that Gold has an inverse relationship with the US Dollar as when the US Dollar is down, Gold tends to rise in value and vice-versa. Think of it as a seesaw, when one is up the other should be down.   I point this out to you to make you aware that when we don't have a correlated market, it means something is wrong.  As traders you need to be aware of this and proceed with your eyes wide open.

Asia traded mainly to the upside, the exception being the Aussie and Indian Sensex exchanges.  As of this writing all of Europe is trading higher.

Possible challenges to traders today is the following:

1.  Veterans Day Holiday in the United States.  Banks closed.
2.  No Major economic news.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Carroll]

The company's generic drug segment should also help push emerging market sales. Abbott markets generic pharmaceuticals outside the U.S. only, and while the division isn't growth-oriented -- sales actually fell around 2% for the quarter -- it provides an entry for the company to push into lucrative new markets such as India, where generics make up the large majority of the country's retail market. The company will face tougher competition in this industry, however: Firms such as India-based Dr. Reddy's (NYSE: RDY  ) have also pushed hard into emerging markets lately, and Dr. Reddy's in particular should benefit from its being headquartered in one of the industry's top locales.

  • [By Benjamin Shepherd] We’re now into day 15 of the US government shutdown, as House Republicans stubbornly try to defund Obamacare. No matter what sort of deal is eventually struck, health care costs aren’t likely to come down any time soon. And that’s good news for generic drug makers.

Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (NYSE: RDY) is one of the biggest players in generic drugs, offering more than 200 off-brand medications in the areas of cardiovascular disease, pain management and oncology, among others. In fact, this India-based company has become one of the largest makers of generics in the world, helping to drive more than 20 percent annual compounded earnings growth at the company over the past decade.

    2. Gimme those car keys
Sniff ... they grow up so fast. Before we know it, little Georgie's going to be ready to sit his royal tuckus in the driver seat. Tata Motors (NYSE: TTM  ) offers a flashback to the days of British colonialism, although this time it's India with the ownership. Although the South Asian automaker is most famous for its Tata Nano, the world's cheapest car, Prince George would probably have his eyes set on Tata's Jaguar Land Rover subsidiary.

  • [By Elliott Gue]

This so-called One Ford initiative involved the US$2.3 billion sale of Jaguar and Land Rover to Tata Motors (TTM) and the US$1.6 billion divestment of Volvo to Geely Automobile Holdings (GELYF.PK). After selling the majority of its stake in Mazda Motor Corp (MZDAY.PK) and discontinuing Mercury, Ford Motor Company's portfolio consists of its eponymous mass-market brand and the higher-end Lincoln.

  • [By Justin Loiseau]

Tesla's good fortune mirrors that of Tata Motors (NYSE: TTM  ) in 2008, when the Indian automaker bought Ford's (NYSE: F  ) floundering Jaguar Land Rover company for a paltry $2.3 billion. And just like Tata, Tesla is hoping to maximize sales in the luxury vehicle department. In April alone, Jaguar sales clocked in at 4,710 units while Land Rover roared ahead with 23,790 units sold. Sales are up 12.2% year over year, and the company enjoyed more than 30% growth in the UK and Asia Pacific.

Hot Chemical Companies To Buy Right Now

Norfolk Southern (NSC), one of the leading railroad networks in the eastern U.S., is scheduled to report its Q3 2013 results on October 23. While the overall volume outlook is positive, we expect the company to face challenges on the revenue per unit (RPU) side. The overall volume will be driven by growth in chemicals, automotive, intermodal and housing-related shipments. However, challenges such as lower volumes of export coal and longer-haul Southern utility coal could lead to a decline in the overall RPU in Q3.

We expect the company to also face profitability pressure in the third quarter due to changes in product mix carried by the company. NSC's railway operating ratio rose to 70.2% in Q2 2013 as compared to 67.5% in Q2 2012, and we will closely monitor this metric in the earnings results.

Recap Of Q2 2013 Results

NSC's operating revenue declined by 3% annually in Q2 2013 to $2.8 billion due to a 5% fall in average RPU, which was partially offset by a 2% increase in overall volumes. Headwinds in the coal market were mainly responsible for the decline in the overall RPU as coal RPU fell by 14% in Q2. The overall volumes rose owing to strength across the intermodal, chemicals, automotive and housing markets.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Lauren Pollock]

Toray Industries Inc.(3402.TO), the global market leader in carbon fiber, agreed to buy smaller rival Zoltek Cos.(ZOLT) in a deal valued at $584 million. The Japanese synthetic-fiber maker offered $16.75 a share, a 9.5% discount to Thurday’s close. Zoltek has struggled amid what it has called a cyclical downturn in the wind energy market. Zoltek shares dropped 10% to $16.58 in light premarket trading.

  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

    3. Zoltek (NASDAQ: ZOLT  )
Zoltek was an interesting investment at the beginning of the year for futurist investors. The company is one of the largest manufacturers of carbon fiber in the world. In fact, its lightweight and high-strength carbon fiber is used almost exclusively in the largest wind turbine blades around the world and played a major role in America's 20-fold improvement in breezy energy capacity since 2000. This material of the future has many other uses and potential uses as well, but Zoltek has never really gained the confidence of the market in any big way: Its market cap was hovering near $300 million at the start of the year.

  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

Shares of world-leading carbon fiber manufacturerZoltek (NASDAQ: ZOLT  ) have been pushed to new highs after a frantic attempt by Quinpario Partners to acquire a large position in the company. Despite being turned away by management, the fund does make valid points about the company's general lack of progress given its global scope and potential. Investors in this business built around a game-changing material may be worrying whether shares are about to fall back to earth. In the following video, Fool.com contributor Maxx Chatsko gives at least one reason for investors to think that shares can hold their current levels -- or even trek higher.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Seth Jayson]

Eastman Chemical (NYSE: EMN  ) reported earnings on April 25. Here are the numbers you need to know.

    The 10-second takeaway
For the quarter ended March 31 (Q1), Eastman Chemical missed estimates on revenues and beat expectations on earnings per share.

  • [By John Divine]

Quarterly results, or a lack thereof, were also the Achilles' heel of Eastman Chemical (NYSE: EMN  ) , which shed 5.1% today. Earnings actually came in above expectations, but sales numbers just didn't cut it, even though the company reported higher revenue in every single geographic region it reports in. Asia especially stood out as a segment of rapid growth, with those sales rocketing more than 50% higher. Although 48% sales growth in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa isn't too shabby, either, especially considering the macroeconomic worries and political instability surrounding those parts of the world.

  • [By Victor Selva] e exception. The firm has made an emphasis on its acetate tow production, mainly used for cigarettes. The company stands out for using coal as its input, in contrast with other competitors using petroleum and gas, both more expensive for production. This mark up has allowed Eastman to transfer some of its increasing costs onto prices, without compromising its sales revenue.

In addition to this, the acquisition of Solutia Inc. (former global leader in performance materials) completed on July 2, 2012, broadened Eastman specialty chemicals output by adding automotive and solar end products to its portfolio.

Although Eastman is a highly diversified company, it has proven to be severely affected by negative cycles of the economy. Even though this feature is not appealing whatsoever to investments, it certainly has caused it to become a cheap alternative. And, a quite promising one, since the economic recovery boosted its revenue, as a result of Eastman focus on cost-advantage production methods.

Other specialty chemical competitors, such as Ashland Incorporated (ASH) didn show such a promising comeback, and the drop in revenue during 2012 was anticipated by investor Jean-Marie Eveillard (Trades, Portfolio), who sold out his 3.9 million share position by the third quarter of that year.

Another industry giant, Huntsman Corporation (HUN) did show more promising results, and less volatile revenues during these last years. This, of course, has led to a high price to earnings ratio discouraging investors as we see later.

    Geographically Diversified

On 2012, almost 50% of Eastman sales were generated in North America, while more than 25% were in Asia and 20% in Europe, Middle East and Africa. This diversification is to be taken into account since it guarantees long-term revenue, even if cigarette consumption decreases in some specific region (for instance, American sales declined in recent years),

Top 10 Warren Buffett Stocks To Watch Right Now

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- Corporate insiders sell their own companies' stock for a number of reasons.

>>Hedge Funds Hate These 5 Stocks -- Should You?

They might need the cash for a big personal purchase such as a new house or yacht, or they might need the cash to fund a charity. Sometimes they sell as part of a planned selling program that they have put in place for diversification purposes, which allows them to sell stock in stages instead of selling all at one price.

Other times they sell because they think their stock is overvalued and the risk/reward is no longer attractive. Some even dump their own stock because they have inside knowledge that a competitor is eating their lunch and stealing market share.

But insiders usually buy their own shares for one reason: They think the stock is a bargain and has tremendous upside.

>>Warren Buffett's Top 25 Stocks for 2014
/p>

The key word in that last statement is "think." Just because a corporate insider thinks his or her stock is going to trade higher, that doesn't mean it will play out that way. Insiders can have all the conviction in the world that their stock is a buy, but if the market doesn't agree with them, the stock could end up going nowhere. Also, I say "usually" because sometimes insiders are loaned money by the company to buy their own stock. Those loans are often sweetheart deals and shouldn't be viewed as organic insider buying.

Activision Blizzard (ATVI) is the world's largest and most successful video game developer, and is majority owned (61%) by French telecom and media conglomerate Vivendi (VIVHY.PK). In conjunction with this, ATVI CFO Dennis Durkin announced on the 4Q12 earnings call

  • [By Mike Arnold]

I normally don't look at charts much, but comparing Orange to its competitors in the French telecommunications market is quite fascinating. As one can see, incumbents Bouygues (BOUYF.PK) and Vivendi (VIVHY.PK) (owner of SFR) saw similar price declines. The market, on the other hand, rapidly bid up the price of new entrant Iliad SA (ILIAF.PK), as a result of forecasts for Iliad to capture significant mobile market share (which it did, around 10%). The wide divergence in price relative to changes in underlying value favor going long the incumbents, including Orange. Because this time it's different.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By James E. Brumley]

No, it's not a Trulia Inc. (NYSE:TRLA) or a Zillow Inc. (NASDAQ:Z). In fact, it's not even close to being a Zillow or a Trulia. Yet, for the time being anyway, Move Inc. (NASDAQ:MOVE) may be the best trade within the online real estate group right now.

Prospective tenants are lining up when a new listing appears, apartments get snapped up in a week or less, and rents are skyrocketing, Jed Kolko, chief economist for housing-services player Trulia Inc. (NYSE: TRLA), told The San Francisco Chronicle.

  • [By Michael Lewis]

For a bit of context, competitor Trulia (NYSE: TRLA  ) is in negotiations to buy Market Leader (NASDAQ: LEDR  ) for $355million. Market Leader is a smaller (and growing) business that's similar to both Zillow and Trulia. Since Market Leader is still earnings negative, we can't compare it on a P/FCF basis, but we can look at other metrics. For one, Market Leader trades at a still-ridiculous-but-slightly less-so 57.2 times forward earnings. It trades at 6.4 times last year's sales. Zillow trades at 16.4 times last year's sales. Management expects sales to hit (on the high end) $182 million -- that implies a price of 10.55 times forward sales. If they double a year or two after, which would be unbelievably phenomenal, it would trade at 5.3 times sales.

  • [By Will Ashworth]

Zillow revenues continue to grow at a rapid pace while losses pile up. In a heated battle withTrulia(TRLA) for the attention of homebuyers, the company is focusing on growing market share rather than achieving profitability.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

It doesn't get any more straightforward than what's going on in shares of industrial gas supplier Praxair (PX). Praxair has been bouncing higher in an uptrending price channel since all the way back in April, which is creating a buyable opportunity in shares this week.

The uptrending channel in Praxair has done a good job of defining the high-probability range for shares since that time. Logically, then, it makes sense to become a buyer as close to trendline support as possible; in short, you want to "buy the bounce." And shares are certainly bouncing now.

Buying off a support bounce makes sense for two big reasons: it's the spot where shares have the furthest to move up before they hit resistance, and it's the spot where the risk is the least (because shares have the least room to move lower before you know you're wrong). Remember, all trend lines do eventually break, but by actually waiting for the bounce to happen first, you're ensuring PX can actually still catch a bid along that line.

The 50-day moving average has been a good proxy for support lately, so it's a solid place to put a protective stop if you decide to be a buyer at this point.

Ciena's banner quarter
Telecommunications equipment maker Ciena (NASDAQ: CIEN  ) stunned the skeptics Thursday with a surprisingly profitable Q2 earnings report. Expected to lose a penny a share, Ciena instead reported a $0.02 profit -- and it beat on revenues, too.

Needless to say, Wall Street liked the report, and this morning, two analysts are hiking their expectations for the stock. The last remaining curveball is BlackBerry (NASDAQ: BBRY  ) , which has hinted at possible licensing deals. BlackBerry and HP have a large customer overlap within the enterprise, and some co-branding could actually prove quite effective there. BlackBerry's last quarter was dismal, and even Jefferies analyst Peter Misek (a vocal bull), has slightly changed his tune and says the company needs to focus more on software at this point. Specifically, BlackBerry's biggest opportunity may lie in mobile device management, or MDM. Licensing BlackBerry 10 to HP could be a step in that direction, focusing on MDM and other services while HP handles the hardware.

What's surprising is that PSID is still a little unfamiliar to the masses at this stage of the Ebola game. It's not just a worry that we only have to worry about domestically. It's now spreading within the United States, which is a whole different ball game than preventing it from getting to the United States. This presents a real risk of pandemic spreading within our borders. PositiveID can help.
