Top 10 Value Companies To Buy For 2014

It a miserable day for U.S. equities, but the U.S. dollar continued its climb, rising to its highest level against the Euro in almost two years.

That great news for some. But the folks at Briefing.com bring up an interesting point. What does a strong U.S. dollar mean for corporate profit?

Remember, while membership in the S&P 500 requires a U.S. domicile, more than half of the revenue generated by its members comes from outside the U.S. A strengthening U.S. dollar can squeeze overseas revenue and dim earnings prospects.

As Briefing.com writes:

The US Dollar Index has seen a huge move in the third quarter, rising 6.9% to leave it up 6.5% for the year. The bulk of that quarterly gain has come in the latter half of the quarter as the euro, pound, and yen have fallen out of bed with currency traders.

The latter point notwithstanding, the average value of the euro and British pound is still higher than it was in the third quarter of 2013. Accordingly, we wouldn’t expect US companies with exposure to those currencies to cite the dollar’s strength as a real drag on third quarter results.

Department of Defense contract officers on Tuesday announced a total of 13 contract awards worth more than $1 billion in aggregate. Notable winners among publicly traded companies included several Army contract awards, including:

Britain's BAE Systems' (NASDAQOTH: BAESY  ) Land and Armaments division won a $28.7 million modification to a previously awarded contract to supply M88A2 heavy equipment recovery combat utility lift and evacuation system vehicles to the U.S. Army. Work on the contract should be complete by March 31, 2014. Raytheon's (NYSE: RTN  ) Thales Raytheon Systems joint venture was awarded a $23.1 million modification to a previously awarded contract to supply Sentinel Mode 5 Identification Friend or Foe kits, and spares, to the Army. Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) , while not ordinarily considered a defense contactor, seems particularly well-suited for the contract it won -- a $10.8 million award to support Army Deployable Universal Combat Earthmover vehicles. Called "DEUCE" for short, these are essentially Army tractors, and so far the Army has ordered $67.1 million of them from Caterpillar under this contract.

In addition to the new awards, the Pentagon also issued contract modifications to both BAE and to General Dynamics (NYSE: GD  ) on a pair of contracts to the effect that both firms are being given an additional six months to develop new prototype ground combat vehicles that the Army is considering as replacementsfor its existing armored personnel carrier fleet. The value of GD's development contract on this project is said to have a maximum value of $180.4 million, while BAE's development contract maxes out at $159.5 million.

Building roads and bridges takes a lot of heavy equipment, and that's exactly what Caterpillar (CAT) makes. Whether a project needs backhoes, excavators, pavers or the articulated trucks to get asphalt and other building materials from one location to another, the Peoria, Ill., manufacturer is the industry leader both in the U.S. and abroad.

Another Dow stock sinking is Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) , also down 1.9% after it was put on notice by short-seller James S. Chanos, who said he was shorting the stock because Caterpillar faces a lot of headwinds relating to the commodities market, where miners generate demand. If commodities demand drops in China, it will hit Caterpillar's sales and profit. The stock still pays a considerable 2.8% dividend yield and trades at just 12 times trailing earnings, but demand can swing wildly, and eventually China will have to stop its stimulus-fueled growth, which could have a big impact on demand. A short-seller's call isn't reason to dump the stock, but it may be a reminder to look at the macro picture and re-evaluate Caterpillar's prospects.
