In a blow for one of Australian Edge’s original “Eight Income Wonders from Down Under,” late last week the Australian government decided to reject Archer Daniels Midland Co’s (NYSE: ADM) AUD3.2 billion bid to acquire GrainCorp Ltd (ASX: GNC, OTC: GRCLF). The deal had included an offer of AUD12.20 per share plus AUD1 per share in a one-time special dividend.

Hear that sound? That’s the sound of Archer-Daniels-Midland’s (ADM) shares running out of gas.
Associated PressArcher’s stock has dropped 3.1% to $40.70 after reports that the EPA would cut the amount of ethanol required to be added to gasoline. The Wall Street Journal has the details:
The Environmental Protection Agency on Friday proposed for the first time to ease an annual requirement for ethanol in gasoline, acknowledging that mandated levels specified in a 2007 law are difficult, if not impossible, to meet.
The EPA is asking refiners in 2014 to blend 15.2 billion gallons of renewable fuelost of it ethanolnto U.S. gasoline supplies. That is about 16% less than what Congress specified in a 2007 renewable fuels law. The law gives EPA the ability to lower the requirement.
Archer isn’t the only stock being hit today. Bunge (BG) has dropped 0.3% to $81.91, while Andersons (ANDE) has fallen 2.2% to $81.55.
Archer was already weak after reports that Australia would block its takeover of GrainCorp.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Sara Murphy]
Liebreich had, perhaps, the warmest praise for NRG Energy (NYSE: NRG ) , describing the company as a model of resilience. "NRG is trying to cannibalize its core business model," said Liebreich. Presciently, the company "would rather cannibalize itself than push back and defend against others." NRG, the biggest power provider to U.S. utilities, has begun providing electricity directly to consumers, bypassing its traditional clients. NRG has gotten into the rooftop solar business for both residential and commercial customers, and intends eventually to offer natural-gas generators to pick up the slack when the sun don't shine. And that, my friend, is what we call a paradigm shift.
