Hot US Stocks To Own For 2014

The Motley Fool's readers have spoken, and I have heeded your cries. After months of pointing outCEO gaffesand faux pas, I've decided to make it a weekly tradition to also point out corporate leaders who are putting the interests of shareholders and the public first and are generally deserving of praise from investors. For reference, here'smy previous selection.

This week, we'll take a trip overseas and highlight the incredible generosity of Next (LSE: NXT  ) CEO Simon Wolfson.

Kudos to you, Mr. Wolfson
It has been a pretty ugly past week across the sea in the United Kingdom. Credit ratings agency Fitch downgraded the U.K.'s credit rating to AA+ last week following a growth forecast reduction to just 0.6% this year from the Chancellor of the Exchequer. It's proof in the pudding that Europe's debt problems won't exclude Britain, and that growth in the region will come at a premium for potentially the next couple of years.

Despite these woes, Simon Wolfson's Next, the largest department store chain in the U.K., and the second-largest apparel company in the U.K, has excelled. In late March, Next reported that its pre-tax profits grew 9%, which topped analysts' projections by approximately $2 million. Furthermore, analysts in the region estimate that Next is taking market share from its rivals by carefully balancing the sale of discounted merchandise with full-priced items. Given that the pound has fallen against the U.S. dollar this year, it's allowed Next to refrain from raising its prices and given shoppers even more incentive to purchase apparel and other household goods.

Precision Castparts Corp. (1.6%) (PCP - $227.24 - NYSE)(PCP) is a manufacturer of investment castings and forgings, primarily for the aerospace and industrial gas turbine markets. The company also makes fasteners and industrial products for the automotive, aerospace, and general industrial markets. PCP is a strong cash flow generator, and we continue to believe the company will use its cash for acquisitions, such as the recently completed Titanium Metals Corporation. PCP's acquisition strategy centers on buying businesses within the company's core competencies, which include manufacturing component products for complex end users. The strategy also includes finding companies that have procurement or technologies similar to PCP's and similar customer profiles. These characteristics should provide opportunities for PCP to improve the acquired company's profitability, thereby enhancing PCP's earnings.

The fiscal year of Precision Castparts (PCP) ends in March. Through the first nine months of the fiscal year, sales advanced 16% and EPS grew 18%. The company is on track to earn about $8.40 for fiscal 2012, up from $7.01 a year ago. Precision has deployed its prodigious cash flow on acquisitions. It created a new platform in aerospace structural components with the $800 million-acquisition of Primus International. In addition, it beefed up its fastener and forgings businesses with two small acquisitions and added to its technical capability in oil & gas pipes with two other acquisitions. The deal making in the oil patch paid off in September when it won a large order to supply specialty pipe to Saudi Aramco with a unique offering that allows customers to pump more oil in less time. Precision has since won an order even larger than the first. We expect more growth from Precision this year as Boeing and Airbus raise production rates. Despite last year activity, Precision still has more cash than debt on its balance sheet, giving it plenty of flexibility to make more acquisitions.

Normally when one of my stocks reports its earnings results after hours on a Friday, I cringe in anticipation of a bad report. Normally Friday after hours is a time slot reserved for companies who have disappointing results to deliver and wish to stay off radar. Naturally, when I got the alert on a Friday afternoon that Pharma-Bio Serv (PBSV.PK) had just reported its earnings results, I had one eye shut when opening the press release, fearing what would be inside.

Bloomberg via Getty Images William 'Bill' Ackman founder and CEO of Pershing Square Capital Management (left) Daniel Loeb, founder and CEO of Third Point: Two activist investors taking big positions in large public companies and demand even bigger changes. Is activist investing a force for good when it comes to shareholders? Recent events, namely the Bill Ackman-J.C. Penney (JCP) debacle, have left investors and analysts tired of the outspoken hedge-funders of the world. There are, of course, plenty of activists whose actions have enhanced not just their funds' portfolios, but those of passive, minority shareholders. They've forced companies to make positive changes -- to restructure, elect new board members, and get back on track toward healthier operations. Then again, others end up like J.C. Penney -- a seemingly lost business, rich with legacy yet left crippled by boardroom drama. That leaves us -- the average consumers and investors -- with a pressing question: Are these megaphoned power players trying to effect change that will benefit all, the company included? Or are they just after results that will juice their own returns? The Age of Activism While many activist investors consider themselves to be molded in the image of a certain Omaha-based super-investor, many of today's hedge fund superstars have taken a very different approach to the craft of identifying mispriced securities. Like the old guard -- raiders like Carl Icahn and Nelson Peltz -- young guns such as Daniel Loeb and Bill Ackman take substantial positions in large public companies and demand change in an approach that is about as far from Warren Buffett's investor behavior as one can get. Their style can be best described as personality-driven activism. The practice is on the rise, too. According to FactSet, 2012 saw 21 activist campaigns in companies with market caps larger than $1 billion. In 2010, the number was 11. In 2003, there were four. While some passive shareholders may
