Best Beverage Stocks To Invest In 2014

Bad news comes in pairs. After a new Markit reportput manufacturing growth at a six-month low, a new Institute for Supply Management (ISM) report tells a similar tale.

Based on surveys of purchasing managers, the ISM's April Purchasing Managers Index clocked in at 50.7%, 0.6 percentage point below March's numbers.

Source: Author, data from ISM

Although this marks the fifth straight month of overall expansion, and the 47thconsecutive month of economic growth, the ever-important manufacturing rate fell for the second month in a row, to reach a new 2013 low. Analysts had expected a 51% reading for April.

New orders and production components crept up 0.9 points and 1.3 points, respectively, but a whopping four percentage point decrease in employment, to 50.2, stymied any April growth prospects.

At the industry level, "furniture & related products" reported the largest growth, followed by "printing & related support activities," and "electrical equipment, appliances, & components." Three of the 18 industries ("wood products," "food, beverage, & tobacco products," and "chemical products") reported contraction for April.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ted Cooper]

Dr Pepper Snapple Group (NYSE: DPS  ) often gets short shrift from observers of the beverage industry. It is a distant third in the cola wars, with Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO  ) and PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP  ) combining for a 70% share of the market compared to Dr Pepper Snapple's 17% share. However, the latter's recent initiatives may enable it to close the gap in 2014.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

In contrast, soda sales are falling. Coke's soda sales were down 4% in the second quarter, Dr Pepper Snapple Group (NYSE: DPS  ) sold3% less, and Pepsi's sales have fizzled in the mid-single-digit range. And Beverage Digest says says per capita consumption of soda has been on the wane since 1998.

We think there are several things to consider with regard to what this deal means for [SodaStream]. 1. This deal validates the home carbonation category, and when[Coca-Cola] +[Green Mountain Coffee Roasters] start to advertise and market the cold platform, we think that could be good for[SodaStream] (especially as we believe [SodaStream] will be a considerably lower-priced system than the [Green Mountain Coffee Roasters] cold drink platform). 2. We hope[SodaStream] hurries up and signs an agreement with [PepsiCo (PEP) (or Dr. Pepper Snapple (DPS), or crazier yet, Nestle/Nespresso) so that they too can offer premium/popular branded flavors to make with their machine. 3. We think the cost to compete likely goes up, and we suspect[SodaStream's] marketing expenses will rise. 4. We are glad that[SodaStream] has another 12+ month head start to figure out how to leverage its first-mover advantage in the category. 5. We think folks should remember that ~2/3 of[SodaStream's] profits come from Europe, where[SodaStream's] sales have grown 20%+ in each of the last two years, and where[Green Mountain Coffee Roasters] barely plays. Of course[Coca-Cola] can help hasten[Green Mountain Coffee Roasters'] entry into Europe, but in all practical terms, Europe should still be a good business for[SodaStream] for years to come.

Advisors' Opinion:

Beam (NYSE: BEAM  ) poured a cocktail of five- and 10-year notes totaling $500 million. The money is funding a tender offer for five series of notes, all with significantly higher coupon rates than the new paper. The deal should save the distiller about $17 million per year in debt service expense.

  • [By Nicole Seghetti]

But the battle for the brown-liquor-sipping consumer won't come without a fight from major rivals Beam (NYSE: BEAM  ) and Brown-Forman (NYSE: BF-B  ) . Earlier this year, Beam announced plans to reduce the alcohol content of its Maker's Mark bourbon in an effort to stretch supply and accommodate demand. The company eventually reversed its decision, but not before Maker's Mark enjoyed a 44% spike in first-quarter sales. And last year, Brown-Forman announced plans for a new whiskey-barrel-making facility in order to meet growing demand for its Jack Daniel's. The company produced more than 11 million cases of the brand in 2012.

Shares of Beam (BEAM) shot up after the spirits maker announced it was being acquired by Japan's Suntory for $16 billion. Suntory is agreeing to pay $83.50 per share -- a 25% premium over Beam's closing price on Friday.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

Spirits makerBeam (NYSE: BEAM  ) did the same thing after its Maker's Mark brand announced that it was going to water down its iconic bourbon to stretch volume, lowering alcohol content from 45% to 42%. After the outcry, it quickly reversed course and made a big show of contrition on its Facebook page.

So this isn't a case like that ofWhiteWave Foods (NYSE: WWAV  ) , which tried to snooker consumers by calling the sugar in its milk the creatively contrived name "evaporated cane juice." Rather, this is a company saying sugar's sugar and telling consumers how much the drink contains -- as the FDA requires it to do -- but it is still facing financial loss regardless.

  • [By John Maxfield]

Meanwhile, the worst-performing stock on the index was Dean Foods (NYSE: DF  ) , which lost more than half of its value. This otherwise disturbing performance followed the company's spinoff of its organic-foods division, WhiteWave Foods (NYSE: WWAV  ) . As fellow Fool Rich Duprey covered here, each Dean Foods shareholder received 0.25544448 shares of WhiteWave class A stock and 0.36380189 shares of its class B stock for every share of Dean Foods.

  • [By Michael Lewis]

Dairy pure-play Dean Foods (NYSE: DF  ) is flirting with its 52-week high after an encouraging earnings report released earlier this week. As it so often goes in special situations, investors deemed the company relatively uninteresting after a high profile spin-off of plant-based food segment WhiteWave (NYSE: WWAV  ) and divestiture of Morningstar -- purveyor of staples such as International Creamer. Skeptics cited declining milk consumption and heavy debt as detractors to the stock, but, post spin-off, Dean Foods is a cash-generating, inexpensive pick in an otherwise difficult sector. With the recent earnings report in mind, let's take a closer look.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Louis Navellier]

The fantastic performance and growth of this company was noted by Portfolio Grader back in August and the stock was upgraded to an A. Shares of SAM stock remain a “strong buy” at the current price. When it comes to beer stocks to buy now, this is one of the most tempting.

Best Booze Stocks to Buy Now -Craft Brew Alliance (BREW)

Craft Brew Alliance (BREW) makes craft beers under three very popular brands for beer aficionados. The Widmar Brothers, Redhook and Kona brands of beer have all received rave reviews … and that’s just one reason BREW is one of the best beer stocks to buy now.

  • [By Chris Katje]

Publicly traded Craft Brew Alliance (BREW) is the owner of three key craft beer brands. The company, through two mergers, owns the brands Redhook, Widmer, and Kona. One of those brands (Redhook) has a partnership coming with Buffalo Wild Wings that could create coverage of the company's stock and blow revenue estimates out of the water.
