Top Shipping Stocks For 2014

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images WASHINGTON -- U.S. businesses pulled back on hiring in May, adding the fewest jobs in four months, a private survey showed. Payroll processer ADP (ADP) said Wednesday that private employers added 179,000 jobs last month, down from 215,000 in the previous month. April's figure was revised slightly lower. Still, the gain in May was in line with the ADP's average monthly hiring figures for the past 12 months. The data suggest that the government's jobs report, to be released Friday, could also show a modest slowdown from April's big gain of 288,000 jobs. But the ADP numbers cover only private businesses and often diverge from the government's more comprehensive report. Economists forecast that the government's figures will show that employers added 220,000 jobs in May, according to a survey by FactSet. Analysts generally didn't change their estimates in response to the ADP report. Hiring appears to be holding steady even though the economy shrank in the first three months of the year at a 1 percent annual rate, the first contraction in three years. Most of the slowdown has been blamed on unseasonably cold weather, which shut factories, disrupted shipping, and kept shoppers away from stores and malls. "The labor market remains strong and the economy is still recovering from the weather-induced hit in the first quarter," Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics, said in a note to clients. The slowdown in the ADP figures occurred mostly in professional and business services, a category that includes many higher-paying jobs such as accountants and engineers, but also lower-paid temporary workers. That category gained 46,000 jobs, compared to 75,000 in April. Construction firms added 14,000 jobs in May, slightly below April's figure, while manufacturers gained 10,000, up from only 2,000 in the prior month. Other recent measures of the job market have been mostly positive. Applications for unemployment benefits are at the lowest level in seven years, evidence that companies are cutting fewer jobs. That is a clear signal employers have largely shrugged off the economy's first-quarter contraction. A drop in layoffs usually corresponds with a pickup in hiring. Factories added jobs in May, according to a private survey released earlier this week, though at a slower pace than in April.

The Q1 2015 earnings report for automotive, audio and consumer accessory distributor VOXX International Corp (NASDAQ: VOXX), a potential peer or performance benchmark of Harman International Industries Inc (NYSE: HAR), Skullcandy Inc (NASDAQ: SKUL) and Turtle Beach Corp (NASDAQ: HEAR), is due out after the market closes on Thursday. Aside from the VOXX International Corp earnings report, it should be said that Harman International Industries Inc reported Q3 2014 earnings on May 1st (they beat expectationsand raised their forecast on strong European automotive demand) and will report Q4 2014 earnings on August 7th; Skullcandy Inc reported Q1 2014 earnings on May 1st and will report Q2 2014 near the end of this month; and Turtle Beach Corp reported Q1 2014 earnings on May 12th. However, VOXX International Corp last earnings report was a train wreck that led to several analyst downgrades.

Another under-$10 stock that's starting to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Turtle Beach (HEAR), which is engaged in developing, commercializing and marketing audio technologies under the Turtle Beach and HyperSound brands in the U.S., Europe and internationally. This stock has been hit hard by the sellers so far in 2014, with shares off sharply by 29%.

If you take a look at the chart for Turtle Beach, you'll notice that this stock recently formed a triple bottom chart pattern at $9, $9.04 and $9.28 a share. Since forming that bottom, shares of HEAR have started to spike higher back above its 50-day moving average of $9.75 a share. That spike is quickly pushing shares of HEAR within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in HEAR if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $10.08 to $10.50 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 195,008 shares. If that breakout gets underway soon, then HEAR will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $11 to $11.40 a share. Any high-volume move above $11.40 will then give HEAR a chance to re-fill some of its previous gap-down-day zone from April that started near $13.50 a share.

Traders can look to buy HEAR off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below those triple bottom support levels. One can also buy HEAR off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Before we get to that, a little background is in order. This attack is really just a continuation by the same short-sale firm that's been trying to take down LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  ) and LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO  ) . This company has gone on to say that BreitBurn is really just LINN Energy junior and that its distribution is "largely a mirage." The problem is that, other than the fact that it's just plain false, it's not giving BreitBurn much of any credit for the oil and gas it has in the ground. Those reserves arewhat matters most if you were to value the firm. That's why for base value the company's third-party-verified reserves are used, which total an estimated 149.4 million barrels of oil equivalent and are spread around the nation, as shown in the following map:
