Top Rising Stocks To Own For 2014

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- Professional traders running mutual funds and hedge funds don't just look at a stock's price moves; they also track big changes in volume activity. Often when above-average volume moves into an equity, it precedes a large spike in volatility.

>>5 Stocks Poised for Breakouts

Major moves in volume can signal unusual activity, such as insider buying or selling -- or buying or selling by "superinvestors."

Unusual volume can also be a major signal that hedge funds and momentum traders are piling into a stock ahead of a catalyst. These types of traders like to get in well before a large spike, so it's always a smart move to monitor unusual volume. That said, remember to combine trend and price action with unusual volume. Put them all together to help you decipher the next big trend for any stock.

>>5 Huge Stocks to Trade for Huge Gains

With that in mind, let's take a look at several stocks rising on unusual volume recently.

Advisors' Opinion:

In a perfect world, an investor could simply look at a company's history and its plausible earnings forecasts, and jump in (or out) knowing the stock's current price basically made sense with respect to past and future performance. We don't live or trade in a perfect world though. In the world we're actually in right now, most stocks, sectors, and industries have run up far beyond a justifiable value... perhaps except for hotel and lodging REIT stocks Host Hotels and Resorts Inc. (NYSE:HST), Strategic Hotels and Resorts Inc. (NYSE:BEE), and Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (NYSE:PEB).

Catalyst Pharmaceutical Partners (CPRX) is focused on the development and commercialization of prescription drugs targeting diseases of the central nervous system with a focus on the treatment of drug addiction and epilepsy. This stock closed flat to $1.87 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $1.78-$1.98

    52-Week Range: $0.41-$3.65

    Tuesday's Volume: 1.62 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 2.20 million

From a technical perspective, CPRX closed off its intraday low of $1.78 to $1.87 with lighter-than-average volume. This stock has been uptrending for the last few weeks, with shares moving higher from its low of $1.29 to its recent high of $2.07. During that move, shares of CPRX have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of CPRX within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if CPRX manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.07 to its 50-day moving average of $2.16 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CPRX as long as it's trending above some near-term support at $1.63 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 2.20 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then CPRX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.87 to $3. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give CPRX a chance to re-test its 52-week high at $3.65.

Stocks on the move: Catalyst Pharmaceutical Partners Inc. (NASDAQ: CPRX) is up about 40% at $1.98 after its firdapse drug treatment for certain kinds of muscle weakness was designated a breakthrough therapy by the FDA. Food maker Dean Foods Inc. (NYSE: DF) held a 1-for-2 reverse stock split this morning and the shares are up about 95%, as might be expected.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One under-$10 biopharmaceutical player that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Catalyst Pharmaceutical Partners (CPRX), which is focused on the development and commercialization of prescription drugs targeting diseases of the central nervous system with a focus on the treatment of drug addiction and epilepsy. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up a whopping 364%.

If you take a look at the chart for Catalyst Pharmaceutical Partners, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong for the last month, with shares soaring higher from its low of $1.29 to its intraday high of $2.09 a share. During that uptrend, shares of CPRX have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed share of CPRX within range of triggering a big breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CPRX if it manages to break out above its 50-day moving average of $2.11 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average volume of 2.21 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then CPRX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.87 to $3 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give CPRX a chance to re-test its 52-week high at $3.65 a share.

Traders can look to buy CPRX off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $1.65 to $1.63 a share. One can also buy CPRX off strength once it starts to take out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

Investors will be on the lookout for further, perhaps larger, customer announcements in the coming quarters. Just remember that there is plenty of time between now and mid-2015. Until then, there should be no worries from the guidance and commercialization aid Solazyme will receive from agri-giants Bunge (NYSE: BG  ) and Archer Daniels Midland (NYSE: ADM  ) .

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Korn and Teller downgraded Mosaic to Equal Weight from Overweight, but expect CF Industries (CF), Agrium and Bunge (BG) to do well in 2014, despite no obvious catalysts.

  • [By David Sterman]

He subsequently closed that position with a nice profit, and he should now check out rival Bunge (NYSE: BG), which in my view, holds better value. (I'll have more to say about Bunge in a separate column in coming weeks).

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Shareholders in Polaris Industries (PII) are having a stellar year in 2013; shares of the $9 billion ATV manufacturer are up more than 55% since the calendar flipped over to January. But even if you missed the move, you shouldn't ignore this stock. PII looks like it's still got higher ground ahead of it.

That's because Polaris is currently forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish price setup that's formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares at $137 and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as PII bounces in between those two technical levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a breakout above $137. When that happens, we've got a buy signal in shares.

Berkshire is currently forming a descending triangle pattern, the bearish opposite of the ascending triangle in PII. The descending triangle is formed by downtrending resistance pushing down from above shares and horizontal support to the downside, in this case at $111. A breakdown through $111 is Berkshire's sell signal.

A parabolic drop in relative strength since June indicates that Berkshire has been woefully underperforming the S&P 500 in recent months -- you can see it from the stock's inability to make new highs in November. Buyers look anemic here, but failure to catch a bid at $111 is the start of something bigger.

Don't sell unless Warren Buffett's baby unless shares fall through that price floor.

Unfortunately, product recalls are a fact of life these days for manufacturers, and bike makers from Honda toSuzuki to Triumph have all had to recall motorcycles. Last year, BMW recalled over 2,000 bikes because of a foaming brake fluid problem that could inhibit braking. Triumph recalled some 12,000 bikes because of a stalling problem. And Polaris Industries (NYSE: PII  ) recalled 6,600 Victory motorcycles for throttle cable problems. In 2011, Honda had to recall 126,000 bikes made between 2001 and 2010, as well as certain models of its 2012 Goldwing because of a braking issue.
